A beautiful manor house occupies this site which is situated on the banks of the River Stour in Dorset. The design brief required the re-modelling of the site as a wedding venue and my response was prompted by the river.
The movement of water is key to the structure of the design and while the river was the inspiration, water also has strong symbolic meanings that are particularly relevant to the wedding story. In parallel, a number of other symbols are incorporated into the design including references to the wedding ring and the bible.
The flow and movement of water in the structure of the site reflects the flow of events that take place during the wedding event. Often there are different locations for different parts of the wedding day and there is a diversity of spaces on this site which makes for a more interesting, non-static, ‘fluid’ sequence of events. Wedding services are often wrapped up with the hymn ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’ and the redesign of the site, I believe reflects the words of the hymn.
